Abstract

Play represents one of the most fundamental developmental contexts in early childhood, serving as a natural medium for the growth of language, social interaction, emotional regulation, and cognitive flexibility. For children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), however, patterns of play often differ from typical developmental trajectories, with reduced symbolic and interactive play frequently associated with challenges in communication and social engagement. This article examines the integral role of parents in shaping and supporting play-based interactions within the home environment, highlighting how family-centered intervention models—grounded in developmental theory and applied behavior analysis—can enhance children’s social communication outcomes. Particular emphasis is placed on culturally responsive practice in Arabic-speaking contexts, addressing the growing need for research, tools, and intervention models that reflect local family structures, values, and everyday realities. In doing so, the article contributes to ongoing global discussions regarding parent-mediated intervention and the importance of culturally grounded, developmentally informed therapeutic practices.
