Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the role of interdisciplinary studies in enhancing research innovation among postgraduate students in Saudi universities, to identify the obstacles that limit this role, and to explore the requirements necessary for its activation. The study adopted the descriptive survey method as the most appropriate approach for achieving its objectives. The study population consisted of all postgraduate students (master’s and doctoral) in three Saudi universities: King Saud University, King Khalid University, and King Abdulaziz University. A questionnaire was administered to a stratified random sample of (386) male and female students. The results indicated that the role of interdisciplinary studies in enhancing research innovation was rated at a very high level, with an overall mean of (4.66). The item “Interdisciplinary studies provide me with opportunities to apply new ideas in diverse educational and practical environments” ranked first, while the item “Interdisciplinary studies enhance my ability to think innovatively in designing research projects” ranked last. Furthermore, the findings revealed that the perceived obstacles were rated at a high level, with an overall mean of (3.83), the most significant being the lack of institutional support in academic and research programs, followed by the absence of incentives and academic recognition for interdisciplinary research. The requirements necessary for activation were also rated at a high level, with an overall mean of (4.21), led by supporting distinguished interdisciplinary research groups and raising students’ awareness of the concept, characteristics, and importance of interdisciplinary studies. Accordingly, the study recommends launching incentive programs in Saudi universities to support the implementation of interdisciplinary research in postgraduate studies, by allocating annual awards for theses based on cross-disciplinary approaches, and organizing applied workshops to train postgraduate students on the methodologies and applications of interdisciplinary studies under the supervision of specialists from diverse fields.
