Abstract

The oil and gas industry poses health risks from exposure to toxic gases and chemicals, including hydrogen sulfide (H2S), hydrocarbon gases, and aromatic solvents, causing respiratory toxicity, organ malfunction, and oxidative stress. This study evaluates the impact of occupational pollutants on laboratory workers in an oil and gas field, examining the link between exposure duration and adverse health effects, and assessing the effectiveness of workplace and nutritional interventions in reducing these risks. A comparative study involved 94 subjects in five main groups: Intermittent Exposure group from headquarters staff occasionally visiting the field, Admin workers, laboratory workers with different experience levels, intervention group of selected lab workers, and another unexposed healthy control group (Reference). Oxidative stress biomarkers (GSH, MDA, catalase, TAC), liver enzymes, albumin, hemoglobin, and lung function were assessed. The effects of workplace improvements and nutritional programs were analyzed. Results: Marked improvements were noted in liver, kidney, and lung functions, cholesterol, and hematological indices (Hb) among laboratory workers after interventions. These workers showed clear recovery, with biomarker values almost returning to normal compared to pre- intervention levels. Enhanced ventilation, regular medical checks, regulated hours, and lifestyle programs improved health and reduced organ toxicity. Workplace and nutritional improvements effectively reduce occupational health risks and enhance overall well-being among laboratory workers.
