Abstract

The internal music between two poets, Al-Mutanabbi and Al-Baha Zuhair, holds that al-Mutanabbī’s poetry is distinguished by eloquence and rhetorical force, whereas Bahā’ Zuhayr’s verse is marked by fluidity and delicacy. In this study, I analyzed a selected corpus from both poets in order to compare the features of their internal poetic music.Internal music refers to irregular musicality within the text—that is, all musical elements of poetry apart from external rhythm based on meter and rhyme. It includes the sounds that constitute the text, the relations among those sounds, and the degree of prominence or obscurity in the metrical feet. After examining these elements in the chosen sample, several patterns emerged. Long vowels appear more frequently in al-Mutanabbī’s poetry than in that of Bahā’ Zuhayr. Fluent consonants are also slightly more common in al-Mutanabbī’s verse, though the difference is not large. Instances of phonetic dissonance in al-Mutanabbī’s poetry are markedly more numerous than in Bahā’ Zuhayr’s, and here the difference is substantial.Based on these observations, the disparities between the two poets in the aforementioned elements are generally limited, except in the case of phonetic dissonance. Consequently, I conclude that al-Mutanabbī’s poetic music is not devoid of smoothness and harmony, even if Bahā’ Zuhayr’s verse is, as classical critics often remarked, more delicate and fluid. The subsequent chapters may reinforce the conclusion reached here, or they may reveal evidence that calls it into question.
