Abstract

Accessibility is a fundamental concept in tourism geography, representing the degree of spatial ease with which tourists can reach destinations and attractions. This study aims to measure the accessibility of tourist attractions in the Asir region, Saudi Arabia, by employing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and quantitative spatial modeling techniques. Five main indicators were integrated: travel time, distance from main roads, slope, elevation, and proximity to tourist services. The analysis employed network analysis, weighted overlay techniques, and both the gravity model and spatial regression model. Results revealed a marked spatial disparity in accessibility levels, with the highest values concentrated along the mountainous corridor extending from Abha to Al-Soudah and Dalghan, while lower levels were found in the coastal and southern sectors characterized by steep topography. Statistical modeling demonstrated that travel time, distance, and slope were the most influential negative factors, whereas moderate elevation and service proximity enhanced spatial attractiveness. The study concludes by emphasizing the need for improved road connectivity and service integration between urban and coastal attractions, and recommends incorporating accessibility indicators into regional tourism planning frameworks to promote sustainable tourism development in the Asir region.
