المعسكرات المؤقتة للعمال فى عصر الدولة الوسطى
Abstract
This article aims to study the Middle Kingdom temporary worker camps, which were provided to the crews of temporary unskilled hired workers (Menial compulsory workers), whose role was to provide support to the specialized, skilled professional workers. In her study on labor organization in Middle Kingdom, Micòl Di Teodoro presented a brief overview of these camps. Through the archaeological and textual evidence, the article provides definitions of these camps and identifies the locations of some of the Old Kingdom camps. The article also aims to contextualize the Middle Kingdom camps in particular by providing a description of their layout and the materials used in the construction of their dwellings. Finally, the article seeks to outline the factors that affected the construction, size, duration and continuity of these camps, identifies the types of workers and administrative staff in these camps and better understands their administrational structure. This article is a scientific contribution in which the researcher attempts to present a documented scientific study, supported by archaeological and textual evidence, about temporary workers’ camps; such scientific studies are rare, especially those that are focused on the Middle Kingdom period.
