Abstract

In today’s world of continual and significant technological advancements, Artificial Intelligence (AI) stands out as being an evolution that poses specific challenges and opportunities, and which raises questions regarding its potential effects on human rights, especially the dangers it may pose when it comes to the possible violation of these rights, such as the right to privacy and the freedom from discrimination, amongst others. The fact that AI can perform operations and functions which previously required human intelligence and oversight along with AI’s potential to surpass and replace human intelligence itself evokes both fear and hope concurrently. On the one hand if AI is used ethically, it could be an invaluable tool for fighting for justice and improving human rights. On the other hand, it also has the capability of perpetuating existing injustices and inequalities and reducing personal liberties. Thus, it is crucial to examine the impact of AI on human rights and shed some light on potential dangers and solutions to the problems raised with the aim of ensuring we benefit from this life-changing technology without endangering or curtailing our personal freedoms. In this article we therefore aim to analyse the relationship between human rights and AI technologies, by examining the risks AI poses to human rights, particularly, the effect of AI on people’s lives in the domains of justice, privacy and freedom. The paper will outline the ethical principles which are necessary to guarantee that the powers of AI are properly harnessed so it can improve social relations, human rights and sustainability. In addition, the paper will discuss the key role that governments must play in monitoring and controlling AI use, and will focus on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which has embraced AI as a central component of its plan to reach the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 plan.
