Bioactive Potentials of Longan (Dimocarpus longan) Fruit Juice vs Hepatic Carcinoma Initiated by Diethylnitrosamine in Rats
Abstract
This research aimed to determine the potential role of longan fruit juice in inhibiting the process of hepatic carcinoma in diethylnitrosamine (DEN)-induced rats and enhancing liver recovery. The treatment used two dosages, 100mg/kg/day and 200mg/kg/day, in comparison to the DEN-positive control group and the DEN+Silymarin treatment group. The results indicated that longan juice contained phytochemicals polyphenols and flavonoids, for which affected in several ways to prevent carcinogenesis, particularly in inhibiting the critical process involved in HCC. This can be envisioned based on the capacity to prevent cancer advancement, which manifested through the lowest malondialdehyde levels among the different treatment groups. In addition, it elevated levels of HDL-c substantially to well above normal levels in a healthy individual, suggesting an evident protective function against atherogenesis. On the systemic level, it accelerated stabilization of cellular membranes in the liver, AST/ALT ratio to normalcy, metabolic efficiency as reflected by FER, as well as maintaining normal levels of creatinine and urea nitrogen to indicate a less conducive microenvironment for cancer development. In conclusion, Dimocarpus longan juice has been shown to be a potential health supplement for countering the toxic environment that leads to hepatic carcinogenesis. The findings of this study suggest that future research should be focused on the isolation of specific polyphenols that can be used as targeted therapy for cancer.
