Comparative Evaluation of Marginal Adaptation of Three Different Root-end Filling Materials under SEM (An In-Vitro Study)
Abstract
Abstract Objective: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the marginal adaptation of three different root-end filling materials, as root-end filling significantly influences the success of endodontic surgery. Materials and methods: Thirty extracted human permanent single-rooted premolars were used in the study. Teeth were decoronated to a standard length of 14 mm followed by root canal instrumentation and obturation. The apical 3 mm of the roots were resected perpendicular to the long axis of the teeth. A 3 mm deep root-end cavity was prepared using an ultrasonic tip. Then teeth were divided to 3 equal groups (n=10) based on the retrograde filling material, MTA, Biodentine and Well-Root PT respectively. The materials were manipulated following the manufacturers’ instructions. A 1 mm slice was sectioned transversely from the root end. They were subjected to gold sputtering and evaluated by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results: The mean gap values of Group III (Well-Root PT), Group II (Biodentine) and Group I (MTA) were (3.17±0.57), (5.30±0.89) and (7.28±0.97) respectively with a statistically significant difference (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Within the study’s constraints, Well-Root PT had the highest marginal adaptation followed by Biodentine, then MTA representing the lowest marginal adaptation when utilized as root end fillings.
