Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between executive functions and both communication skills and social interaction in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as well as to determine the predictive power of executive functions for both social interaction and communication skills. The study employed a descriptive correlational approach. The standardization sample consisted of (32) children aged (4–6) years, while the main sample comprised (20) children aged (4–6) years. Three scales were used: the Executive Functions Scale (prepared by the researcher), the Communication Skills Scale (Abdulghani, 2013), and the Social Interaction Scale (Al-Shakhs, 2017). The results revealed statistically significant positive correlations at the 0.01 and 0.05 levels between most dimensions of executive functions and both dimensions of social interaction and communication skills. Furthermore, regression analysis demonstrated that executive functions are a statistically significant predictor of both social interaction and communication skills in children with ASD. These results confirm the pivotal role of executive functions in explaining differences in social and communicative performance among this group, highlighting the importance of developing these functions to enhance their interaction and communication skills. The researcher recommended future research to investigate the impact of improving executive functions on other areas of cognitive, emotional, and social development in children with autism spectrum disorder.
