Abstract

The current study aims to investigate the effectiveness of using the mental imagery strategy in developing reading comprehension skills and fostering positive attitudes toward reading among third-grade female students with reading difficulties. The study adopted a quasi-experimental design based on a one-group pretest-posttest model. To achieve the study’s objectives, the Reading Comprehension (PC) Test, included in the Test of Reading and Spelling (TORS), was administered, along with a reading attitudes test developed by the researcher. Additionally, a program utilizing the mental imagery strategy, also designed by the researcher, was implemented. The study sample consisted of 10 third-grade female students enrolled in a learning disabilities program at two public elementary schools in Jeddah. The findings revealed statistically significant differences at a significance level of (α ≤ 0.05) between the pretest and posttest mean scores of the students in both the reading comprehension test and the reading attitudes test, in favor of the posttest. This confirms the effectiveness of the mental imagery strategy in improving reading comprehension and fostering positive attitudes toward reading among the study sample. Based on these results, the study recommends training special education teachers to incorporate mental imagery in teaching Arabic to students with learning difficulties.
