Abstract

The study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the Portage Early Intervention Program in raising the level of psychosocial adaptation among mothers of children with Down syndrome in Amman. The quasi-experimental approach and the psychosocial adjustment scale were used. The sample consisted of (40) mothers of children with Down syndrome who were selected by the intentional sampling method and randomly distributed into two equal groups: an experimental group that was trained on the Portage Early Intervention Program, and a control group that did not receive any training. The results showed a significant difference between the means of the individuals in the two groups (experimental and control) on the post- test of psychosocial adaptation, due to the training program in favor of the experimental group, where the effect size of the training program reached (43.4%). The results also showed no significant difference between the means of the scores of the individuals in the two groups on the post- of psychosocial adaptation, due to the interaction between the training program and the mother’s age. According to these finding, the study recommended the need to support mothers of children with Down syndrome psychologically and emotionally through early intervention programs.
