Seismic Behavior of Framed R.C Multi-Story Buildings Using Nonlinear Pushover analysis -1
Abstract
Introduction: Damage is permitted in seismic design, but it should be controlled. Additionally, a structure's collapse behavior is either entirely or partially inelastic.Aim: Therefore, nonlinear force-displacement static analysis is usually required for a seismic assessment of a structure. This kind of analysis is known as pushover analysis, and it involves updating the stiffness matrix at each load step while analyzing the building for progressively increasing lateral loads. Methodology: The finite Element Method-based SAP 2000 v22 software was used for the modeling, analysis, and result interpretation. To ensure this study adheres to ATC-40 standards, a multi-story RC building of varying heights is subjected to pushover analysis to assess its capacity curves and identify potential failure mechanisms. Seismic properties were compared at the performance point of the structure. Results: This study indicates that the middle stories of the building are the most vulnerable to earthquakes, and the building's period increases with the building's exposure to earthquakes. The greater the number of stories, the greater is the increase in building periods due to the formation of ductile plastic joints. The increase in building times due to lateral loads may reach 50%. Recommendations for improved design strategies are provided, emphasizing the incorporation of performance-based design principles.
