Effect of Implementing Nursing Care Bundle on The Clinical Outcomes of Patients with Chest Injuries
Abstract
Background: Chest injury represents 20–25% of all traumas worldwide and consideredthird cause of death for polytrauma patients, following head trauma and abdominalinjuries. Aim: Evaluate the effect of implementing nursing care bundle on the clinicaloutcomes of patients with chest injuries. Design: Quasi- experimental study design.Settings: Traumatology and Emergency Medicine Intensive Care Unit at Tanta universityand Cardio thoracic critical care unit at kafr- Elshikh general hospital were site of thisresearch. Subjects: Eighty purposive chest injured patients who were admitted topreviously mentioned settings. Tools: Data were collected using Tool 1, Chest InjuryPatient’s Assessment Questionnaire.Tool II, Patient’s Clinical Outcome Assessment. Results: The findings revealed that majority (95.0%& 97.5%) of control and study groupshad severe pain on admission while (52.5%) of study group had mild pain compared to(25.00%) of control group at 4th day of study. Additionally, it was noticed that about twothirds of both groups (62.5% &60.00%) had moderate dyspnea on admission while twothirds (62.5%) of study group and less than one fifth (12.5%) of control groups had nodyspnea on the 4th day of study. Concerning chest injury complication, it was noticed thathypoxia and hypercapnia among study group (37.5%) compared to (87.5%) among controlgroup. Regarding dyspnea assessment, statistically significance differences were observedbetween control and study groups with P=0. 000.Conclusion: Nursing care bundle hadpositive effect on decreasing severity of pain associated with chest injury, reducingdyspnea degree, improving physiological parameters and decreasing rate of chest injuryrelated complications. Recommendations: Chest injury care bundle is suggested to beconducted as scheduled care for all patients with chest trauma.
