Quality of Life after Multi Level Obstructive Sleep Apnea Surgeries
Abstract
Background: Recurrent upper airway obstruction during sleep is a typical symptom of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which can lead to hypoxemia, disturbed sleep, and a lower quality of life. The most common treatment is still continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), but many patients are intolerant or noncompliant, necessitating surgery. The study aims to assess the effect of OSA multi level surgery treatment on health-related quality of life. Methods: This prospective study included 24 adult patients diagnosed with mild to severe OSA who were intolerant to CPAP therapy. All patients underwent multi-level airway surgery tailored according to drug-induced sleep endoscopy findings. Apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) measurements were made before to surgery and at 6-month follow-up, and the Short Form-36 (SF-36) questionnaire was used to evaluate quality of life. Results: There was a significant postoperative reduction in AHI compared to baseline values, indicating improvement in the severity of OSA. Additionally, SF-36 scores demonstrated notable enhancement across multiple domains, including physical functioning, general health perception, vitality, social functioning, and mental health. These findings reflect substantial improvement in overall health-related quality of life after multi-level surgical intervention. Conclusion: Multi-level upper airway surgery is an effective treatment option for selected OSA patients who are unable to tolerate CPAP. It leads to significant improvements in both objective polysomnographic outcomes and subjective quality of life measures. Early identification and appropriate surgical planning contribute to better postoperative outcomes and patient satisfaction.
