Abstract

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) myelitis is a rare neurological infection that often results in long-term effects on the central nervous system. Myelitis is generally observed in immunocompromised individuals, and such cases have scarcely been reported; therefore, no established treatment currently exists. We herein report our experience with the successful treatment of a 46-year-old female patient with VZV myelitis and disseminated herpes zoster using antiviral drug administration and steroid pulse therapy. In addition, as the patient developed myelitis despite only mild cellular immunosuppression, we discussed the etiology of the disease and measures for preventing VZV reinfection and relapse.
