Abstract

Introduction: The growing demand for natural and sustainable skincare solutions has led to increasing interest in fungi-derived ingredients. These bioactive compounds offer multifunctional benefits in cosmetic formulations, including hydration, antioxidant protection, and anti- aging effects. This review aims to explore the biological roles and applications of fungal proteins, enzymes, polysaccharides, and secondary metabolites in skincare and cosmetic products. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was performed using Science Direct, Scopus, and PubMed databases. Full-text articles relevant to fungi-derived compounds in cosmetics were selected, and duplicates were excluded. A total of 120 peer-reviewed articles were analyzed to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and functional role of fungal bioactives in skincare. Results: Fungi such as Aspergillus, Penicillium, Trametes, and Saccharomyces possess bioactivities including anti-inflammatory, moisturizing, antioxidant, and antimicrobial effects. Enzymes like tyrosinase and laccase support skin exfoliation and brightening, while polysaccharides such as beta-glucans exhibit wound healing and anti-irritant effects. Secondary metabolites like kojic acid and ergothioneine contribute to skin brightening and protection against oxidative stress. Antimicrobial compounds from fungi enhance product stability, and fungal-derived amino acids resembling mycosporine are being explored as natural UV filters. Discussion: The multifunctional properties of fungal compounds position them as promising candidates for cosmetic innovation. Their roles align well with current consumer preferences for natural, effective, and sustainable ingredients. However, further research is required to address challenges related to extraction methods, formulation stability, and regulatory approval. Conclusion: Fungi-derived bioactives represent a viable and eco-friendly option for modern skincare and cosmetic formulations. Their diverse biological properties-ranging from moisturizing to photoprotection-support their integration into natural product development. This review highlights the transformative potential of fungal biotechnology in advancing safe, effective, and sustainable cosmetic solutions.
