Holistic management of Mandal Kustha (Psoriasis) through Panchakarma: A Case Study
Abstract
The skin, one of the five Gyanindriyas, serves not only as a sensory organ but also provides protection against external trauma. Mandal Kustha (Psoriasis) is a skin disorder characterized by an imbalance in Sleshma i.e. Kapha and is classified under Mahakushta, a severe category of skin diseases in Ayurveda. The condition presents with symptoms such as red spots, elevated patches, intense itching, and burning sensations, often accompanied by the shedding of silvery scales. Mandal Kustha primarily results from the vitiation of Kapha Dosha and the involvement of Rasa, Rakta, and Mamsa Dhatu. Modern medical treatments offer suppressive solutions, but they do not address the root causes, leading to frequent relapses. In contrast, Panchakarma, an Ayurvedic detoxification therapy, offers a more holistic approach to managing this chronic condition. This case study examines the treatment of a 31-year-old male patient with silvery scaly lesions, severe itching, and daily scale shedding. The patient underwent Virechana Karma, a type of Panchakarma therapy. After completing the treatment, significant improvement in the clinical manifestation of Mandal Kustha was observed, demonstrating the potential of Ayurvedic therapies in providing long-term relief for skin disorders like psoriasis.
