Abstract

This project contains the stimulus materials from the paper "Iconicity and transparency in Dutch Sign Language". Data and analysis scripts from the study are available on OSF: https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/U7RKFProject descriptionWe are presenting stimulus materials from an iconicity rating task with deaf and hearing raters, and from a transparency task with hearing non-signers. The original videos in high resolution are part of a larger project on NGT learning in primary school children and are also available under a CC BY-NC 4.0 license. In the iconicity rating task, individual signs from Dutch Sign Language (Nederlandse Gebarentaal, NGT) were presented alongside with their written translations to deaf signers, and hearing non-signers from the Netherlands and Germany. Participants were asked to rate how much they thought signs looked like what they mean on a scale from 1-7. The video stimuli were recorded as part of a larger set of recordings with four different deaf signers in a studio setting. They are produced as naturally as possible as if presenting the signs to a child, as they were also used in a set of games for teaching NGT to primary school children. For the transparency task, the same videos were processed to mask the mouth area of the face in order to obscure lexical information that may be available through lipreading. These videos were presented to Dutch non-signers who were asked to provide one-word translations for each sign.Project componentsMaterials in this project are structured into subcomponents, separating different types of materials. The written and signed translations are available in the project component "Task instructions" for academic reuse. The individual signs are available in separate folders by staring letter in the project components "Stimuli_Masked/Unmasked_#". Each video contains a single lexical sign. For additional information on the individual stimulus video files, refer to the Codebook and Metadata file in the project component "Metadata".
