Abstract

One of the challenges in building a predictive numerical model for composites is accurately modeling the behavior of a structure, especially under impact loading. In prior reports, details of a newly developed orthotropic material model that has three distinct sub-models for describing deformation, damage, and failure of general composites, and has been implemented in the commercial finite element program, LS-DYNA, as *MAT_213 (*MAT_COMPOSITE_TABULATED_PLASTICITY _DAMAGE), were presented. Specifically, the prior implementations supported the use of thin shell and solid finite elements. This report discusses the implementation of thick shell elements to support the MAT_213 constitutive model in LS-DYNA as well as the verification and validation (V&V) tests carried out to ensure that the implementation is accurate and robust.
