Data Management Plan: Understanding match official decision-making in the context of VAR
Abstract
This is the Data Management plan for the PhD research project 'Understanding match official decision-making in the context of VAR', which is looking to explore the relationship between legal theories about adjudication and decision-making by match officials in professional football. I want to explore whether one specific group of writers (interpretive theorists) who wrote about adjudication - how judges make decisions in court cases - provide any relevant insight into how football match officials make decisions. My thesis considers ‘video-assisted’ decisions in particular: decisions made by match officials using the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system. I want to study how such decisions are made, how far the decision-making progress currently reflects theories about adjudication, why the introduction of VAR has not lessened the controversy around contentious decisions, and how far theories of adjudication could inform a new standard of best practice.
