Abstract

Background. Numerous clinical and epidemiological investigations showed an increased risk of periodontitis in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2. For the local treatment of generalized periodontitis in diabetes mellitus, a drug composition was proposed. Clinical application of this drug composition showed its effectiveness. Therefore, it was important to clarify the long-term treatment outcomes. Aim: to determine the remote (after 6, 12 months) results of using a drug composition and its effectiveness during a comprehensive treatment of generalized periodontitis in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2. Materials and methods. Before the start of treatment and after its completion at long-term follow-ups (after 6, 12 months), the periodontal condition of the patients was carefully examined in accordance with generally accepted recommendations with the determination of periodontal indices. The Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S), the Schiller-Pysarev test, the papillary-marginal-alveolar (PMA) index according to S. Parma, the bleeding on probing (BOP), and the clinical attachment loss were used. Results. Examination of patients in the main group before the start of a comprehensive treatment showed approximately the same periodontal condition as in the comparison and control groups. A comprehensive treatment significantly improved hygienic condition (OHI-S), reduced inflammation (PMA), and the BOP. The clinical level of attachment loss remained stable, indicating a slowing of alveolar bone resorption. Conclusions. The results obtained showed that the use of the proposed treatment for generalized periodontitis in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 in the remote terms (6, 12 months after treatment) allows to achieve greater effectiveness. The state of stabilization of the periodontium is maintained, while in the comparison group, there was a slight progression of the dystrophic-inflammatory changes, which proves the advantages of a comprehensive approach to therapy.
