THE ANALYSIS OF THE GARLAND PIROĆANKE BY BORIVOJE POPOVIĆ
Abstract
This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the song cycle Piroćanke by Borivoje Popović, with a focus on text, music, and their interactive relationship. The first part examines the text, analyzing the form of the text, number of stanzas, thematic motifs, characters, and dramaturgical aspects. Special attention is given to the dynamic structure of the text, revealing the distribution of climaxes and anticlimaxes. The second part analyzes the musical flow, including tonal changes, variations in rhythm and meter, harmonic functions and dynamics, as well as the distribution of voices in the choir and solo parts. The third part explores the influence of music on the text and vice versa, showing how the composer uses tempo, dynamics, and choral texture to illustrate the characters’ emotions and dramaturgical situations. The study concludes that the cycle is conceived as a varied-strophic form, that the musical flow consistently follows the text, and that text and music together create a coherent, dramaturgically complex, and emotionally powerful whole, with clear climaxes in the third song and contrasts in dynamics and tempo.
