Los internados para indígenas durante los primeros gobiernos de la posrevolución en Chiapas, 1918-1920
Abstract
This article examines the impact of two boarding schools for the indigenous population in an attempt to castilianize and incorporate Tseltal and Tsotsil people from the Highlands of Chiapas into the national culture. It analyzes the establishment, organization, material conditions, financing, and curriculum of the Escuela de Experimentación para Indígenas (Experimentation School for Indigenous People) and the Escuela para la Regeneración de la Raza Indígena (School for the Regeneration of the Indigenous Race), which were founded in 1918 in San Andrés Chamula and San Cristóbal de Las Casas, respectively. Both schools constituted some of the first experiments in Chiapas, and probably in Mexico, that sought to create educational spaces exclusively for indigenous people during the post-revolutionary years. Despite the attempts, the scarcity of resources among the indigenous population made it difficult to pay the taxes necessary for educational financing, causing the project to fail.
