Abstract

The average lifespan of the pet guinea pig is increasing due to the popularity of the species and advances made in awareness of the dietary requirements, husbandry needs and veterinary care of all exotic pets. Owing to their increasing longevity, it is becoming more common for guinea pigs to be presented with diseases associated with the ageing process. This chapter covers the diagnosis and management of conditions commonly associated with ageing in guinea pigs, most of which are not amenable to cure. This chapter also discusses the ethical aspects of euthanasia and quality of life; Chapter 4 covers practical aspects of euthanasia.
