Enhancing Small-signal Stability of Multimachine Power Systems under High Renewable Penetration Using the Pelican Optimization Algorithm
Abstract
This study proposes a coordinated control strategy using the pelican optimization algorithm (POA) to enhance small-signal stability in a multimachine power system with high renewable energy penetration. The method optimizes the placement and tuning of static VAR compensators (SVC) and power system stabilizers (PSS) based on the dynamic characteristics of the southern sulawesi (Sulbagsel) system.Benchmark analyses confirm that POA provides superior convergence and accuracy compared to particle swarm optimization, firefly algorithm, hippopotamus algorithm, and whale optimization algorithm under various operating conditions. The optimized SVC reduces transmission losses and improves bus voltage profiles, while the POA-tuned PSS significantly enhances damping ratios, shifts eigenvalues toward stable regions, and improves transient responses under wind power disturbances.Time-domain simulations show notable reductions in overshoot and settling time, demonstrating POA's effectiveness in mitigating electromechanical oscillations across multiple scenarios.Overall, the proposed approach substantially strengthens system stability and reliability under increasing renewable penetration.
