Abstract

The Bhagavata Purana is one of the eighteen Mahapuranas composed by Vyasadeva. This Purana is considered the equivalent of the Vedas for the Vaishnava community. Among the various topics discussed, the description of hell is particularly important. Shukadeva narrated this description of hell to Parikshit. In essence, hell is the place of torment for sinners in the afterlife. In the afterlife, people suffer according to their bad deeds in this world. Yama is the lord of hell, and he punishes the sinners. The Bhagavata Purana mentions twenty-eight types of hells. This article describes these twenty-eight hells.
