Education in vedic period
Abstract
The picture of the society as reflected in the Vedic literature is undoubtedly a reflection of a developed India. The education system of the Vedic age was governed by a higher ideal. The main aim of education was the overall welfare of the students and the progress of the whole society. The student life was a preparatory phase for the entire social life. After completing their education in the Gurukul, they returned home and spent their household life. Some students used to travel in different places in search of knowledge. There were also parishads for advanced studies. Theological discussions were also made under the supervision of a renowned scholar. This philosophy of education in ancient India holds some eternal truths which are as applicable to that era as they were to the students of current age.
