Sustainable textiles: Environmental impact, innovations and the role of home science
Abstract
The global textile industry is among the most resource-intensive and environmentally polluting sectors, contributing significantly to water pollution, carbon emissions, waste generation, and ecological degradation. In response to growing concerns regarding environmental sustainability and ethical production, sustainable textiles have emerged as a viable alternative to conventional textile materials and processes. Sustainable textiles encompass eco-friendly fibers, recyclable and biodegradable materials, low-impact dyeing techniques, and innovative technologies that minimize environmental harm while promoting social responsibility. This paper examines the environmental impacts of conventional textiles, explores emerging innovations in sustainable textile materials and processes, and highlights the critical role of Home Science in promoting sustainable textile production and consumption. Adopting a qualitative, descriptive research design based on secondary sources, the study synthesizes insights from academic literature, policy documents, and industry reports. The analysis emphasizes alternative fibers, recycled materials, natural dyes, digital printing, smart textiles, and bio-based innovations as key pathways toward sustainability. The paper concludes that Home Science, through education, research, and community outreach, plays a pivotal role in fostering sustainable textile practices, enhancing consumer awareness, and supporting environmentally responsible lifestyles. Integrating sustainability principles within textile education and household practices can significantly contribute to environmental protection, resource conservation, and sustainable development.
