Tradition and Transition: Gender Dynamics in the Preservation of Sattriya Culture
Abstract
Dating back to the sacred Vaishnavite Sattras (monasteries) of 15th-century Assam, Sattriya is a colourful testimony to India’s rich classical dance heritage, making it one of the eight classical dance forms of India. This dance was a devotional offering of bhaktas (celibate monks), and thus, the spiritual and cultural heart of Assamese Vaishnavism, shaped a new identity known as the Sattriya Sanskriti (Sattriya Culture). For centuries, the performances of Sattriya were confined to religious rituals and women were barred from entering thereunto. However, the mid-20th century marked a turning point when this dance form made a transition from the four walls of the monastery to the proscenium, allowing women to become key practitioners. The inclusion of women in Sattriya played a crucial role in preserving authenticity while adapting it for proscenium performances and contemporary audiences. Using a thematic analysis of the pre-documented interviews of renowned practitioners, cultural accounts and modern performances, this research highlights how they have faced challenges in taking this tradition out of the four walls of the monastery and women’s contribution in safeguarding the essence of Sattriya while addressing the challenges they face in a male-dominated tradition. It delves into its role in sustaining the traditional element while expanding its reach to wider audiences. Additionally, it examines the innovations brought by women, such as changes in costume, choreography, and thematic representations that have redefined the dance for contemporary audiences and kept its ritualistic origin intact. By placing Sattriya in the socio-cultural narrative of Northeast India, this paper seeks to convey its dual identity as a marker of Assamese heritage and a dynamic medium for cultural identity formation. Ultimately, it aims to elaborate on how women have played a vital role in ensuring the continuity and relevance of Sattriya above all changing cultural and socio-political contexts.
