Historical Trajectories of Dalit Movements and Socio-Political Empowerment in Tamil Nadu (1850–2010)
Abstract
This study examines the historical trajectories of Dalit movements and their role in socio-political empowerment in Tamil Nadu between 1850 and 2010. Adopting a historical-analytical approach, the research traces the evolution of Dalit assertion across colonial, nationalist, post-independence, and contemporary phases. The study analyzes how early reform initiatives, educational mobilization, and caste associations laid the foundation for organized resistance against entrenched social hierarchies. It further explores the intersection of Dalit politics with the non-Brahmin movement, constitutional reforms, and democratic expansion in shaping access to representation and institutional participation. The post-independence period is examined in terms of affirmative action policies, welfare interventions, and grassroots activism that contributed to expanding opportunities in education, employment, and governance. The study also highlights the rise of identity-based politics and cultural assertion in the late twentieth century, emphasizing the role of literature, faith-based reform, and civil society networks in constructing a Dalit public sphere. While significant progress was achieved in political representation and institutional inclusion, persistent structural constraints such as occupational stratification, socio-economic inequality, and caste-based discrimination limited the depth of empowerment. The findings suggest that Dalit empowerment in Tamil Nadu has been a multidimensional and evolving process shaped by negotiation, resistance, and state intervention. The study concludes that sustainable socio-political transformation requires not only formal policy inclusion but also structural redistribution and continued collective mobilization to address enduring caste hierarchies.
