Abstract

The Indian freedom struggle was a mass movement that mobilized people across regions, classes, and communities against colonial rule. India’s Unsung Women Freedom Fighters explores the neglected contributions of women whose participation in the freedom movement has been historically marginalized. Moving beyond elite accounts, the paper analytically re-examines the largely marginalized contributions of India’s women freedom fighters. Through analysis of primary and secondary sources—including government archives and scholarly works—it reveals that women’s participation was multidimensional and strategic, moving beyond non-violent protest to include armed resistance, political leadership, cultural preservation, diplomatic engagement, and covert activism. By examining figures from coastal, northeastern, western, eastern, northern, and southern regions of India, the study challenges narrow historical narratives and calls for an integrated understanding of women’s varied and vital roles in India’s independence movement.
