A case study of homoeopathic treatment for alopecia areata
Abstract
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder that affects the hair follicles, leading to partial or complete hair loss. It usually manifests as distinct bald patches on the scalp but may also involve other hair-bearing areas of the body. It has a strong association with autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), vitiligo, autoimmune thyroiditis, and autoimmune hemolytic anemia. The disease occurs when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the hair follicles, leading to inflammation and hair loss. Alopecia areata can affect anyone, regardless of age, race, or gender. Although it can occur at any age, onset is most common during the teens, twenties, or thirties. When it appears before the age of 10, the condition tends to be more severe and progressive. The global prevalence is estimated to be around 2%. Homeopathy offers a holistic and individualized approach to treating alopecia areata, selecting remedies based on a patient’s physical, emotional, and mental constitution. This paper highlights the efficacy of constitutional homeopathic medicine, supported by dietary guidance and management of associated diseases such as thyroid disorders, to achieve faster recovery and minimize recurrence.
