Abstract

The combination of digital technology with Self Help Groups (SHGs) is bringing a progressive change in its functioning. Historically, SHGs have been essentially working for financial access, empowering women, and nurturing the whole community at the grassroot level. However, their progress has often been obstructed by lack of information, transparency and keeping records manually. The introduction of digital platforms, mobile banking, and government initiatives such as the Digital India Mission and National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM), has brought a remarkable change in the operations of SHGs. This study investigates how digital empowerment increases the efficiency, transparency and sustainability of SHGs by improving credit access and e-governance services. The research also studies about the challenges faced such as digital illiteracy, inadequate infrastructure, and cybersecurity issues that make the digital platforms unpopular in rural areas. The study concludes that digital empowerment can revolutionize the functioning of SHGs, enabling them to become more autonomous, financially inclusive, and capable of adapting to future socio-economic shifts in India.
