Abstract

The exponential growth of internet accessibility and social media platforms has significantly altered the lifestyle, learning patterns, and psychosocial development of adolescents, particularly university-level students. While digital technologies provide academic support, social connectivity, and global exposure, excessive use poses serious risks to mental health, academic performance, and social behavior. This mixed-method research study investigates the effects of excessive internet and social media use on adolescents studying at universities in Jaipur City. The study integrates a comprehensive review of existing literature with hypothetical primary data collected through structured questionnaires administered to university students aged 18-24 years. Findings indicate that excessive use is strongly associated with anxiety, reduced academic concentration, sleep disturbances, social withdrawal, and declining academic performance. The paper concludes that balanced digital engagement, institutional awareness programs, and psychological support systems are crucial for mitigating negative consequences. The study contributes to the growing discourse on digital well-being among Indian university students.
