Abstract

This study examines the career preferences of graduates in the Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh, with a special emphasis on the factors influencing their employment choices. The study is based on primary data collected through a structured questionnaire from 100 graduate respondents, ensuring equal representation of male and female participants (50% each) to maintain gender balance. A descriptive research design was adopted to analyse the nature of career preferences and the underlying determinants. The findings reveal that government employment continues to remain the most preferred career option among the youth of Jhansi, reflecting the persistent importance of job security in career decision-making. Despite the availability of private sector opportunities, graduates place job stability above high income, indicating a risk-averse attitude toward employment in an uncertain economic environment. The study also highlights the significant influence of family background on employment preferences, as parental occupation, economic security, and social expectations play a crucial role in shaping career choices.Overall, the study suggests that career preferences of graduates in Jhansi are largely driven by the need for stability, security, and familial influence rather than income maximization alone. The findings provide useful insights for policymakers, educational institutions, and employment agencies in designing career guidance, skill development programs, and employment policies aligned with the aspirations of regional youth.
