Digital revolution and financial sector transformation: Role of FinTech and Digital Payments in India
Abstract
This article analyses the impact of the digital revolution on India’s financial sector, with a specific focus on the role of FinTech innovations and digital payment systems. Adopting a descriptive and analytical research design, the study relies exclusively on secondary data obtained from the Reserve Bank of India, National Payments Corporation of India, World Bank publications, and peer-reviewed scholarly literature. The analysis indicates that digital payment platforms such as the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AEPS), and mobile-based payment services have substantially improved efficiency, transparency, and access to formal financial services in both urban and rural areas. FinTech innovations have further contributed by lowering transaction costs, enhancing customer convenience, and promoting financial inclusion. Despite these advances, the study identifies persistent challenges related to cybersecurity threats, digital literacy gaps, data privacy concerns, and infrastructural constraints. The paper concludes that although digital finance has emerged as a crucial driver of inclusive financial development in India, sustained regulatory oversight, robust digital infrastructure, and targeted financial literacy initiatives are essential for ensuring secure and sustainable growth.
