The role of nutrition in combat athlete performance
Abstract
Combat sports such as wushu boxing, wrestling, judo, and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) are characterized by intermittent high-intensity efforts and competition within strict weight categories, necessitating precise and periodized nutritional strategies to support both performance and weight management. Intake of both carbohydrates and protein is needed to provide enough energy, restore glycogen and maintain and repair muscles during calorie restriction. Even when trying to lose weight, it’s essential to eat enough fat for your hormones and cells. Hydration matters, since mild dehydration can damage one’s ability to keep temperature stable, move with coordination or think clearly. In spite of clearly listed dangers, millions of users turn to rapid weight loss programs using dehydration and little food, causing their performance to drop and endangering their health. Slowly dropping weight under a professional’s guidance is both safe and successful. Properly spacing carbohydrates and protein around training workout helps to recover and adjust better. Following the anti-doping rules, creatine, caffeine, beta-alanine and BCAAs can be beneficial. This review outlines current evidence and practical recommendations for nutritional strategies aimed at enhancing athletic performance, supporting safe weight management, and promoting long-term well-being in combat sport athletes.
