Impact of Indian classical raga’s on emotional and psychological variables: A systematic review
Abstract
Indian classical music raag system is recognised as potent tool for mood swings, spiritual elevation, and emotional expression and promote mental-physical harmony. For this purpose, this review situates traditional knowledge of Raag treatment within the context of current scientific research and examines the emotional and psychological impacts of Indian classical music Raags. Studies on Raags in experimental and therapeutic settings were systematically searched through academic databases and cultural sources, and the subjective and objective results were examined. Based on self-statement, physiological indicators, and neurophysiological measures such as EEG, research indicates that Raags like Darbari, Khamaj, Jai Jaiwanti, and Malhar are associated with stress reduction, improved emotional control, and increased relaxation. The cultural distinctiveness of Raag-based therapies and the universality of music's psychological benefits are both highlighted by comparisons with international music therapy research. Overall, the review emphasises the need for more interdisciplinary research to provide firmer scientific foundations for the therapeutic application of Raags, while also providing evidence that they can be beneficial as adjunctive treatments for psychological well-being.
