Effect of roughness on steady and dynamic characteristics of pivot slider bearing with MHD and CSF
Abstract
A theoretical analysis is conducted to determine how surface roughness affects the static and dynamic characteristics of pivot slider bearings lubricated with coupled stress fluid in the presence of a magnetic field.Based on Christensen stochastic theory, the modified Reynolds equation has been developed by taking consideration of longitudinal and transverse one-dimensional roughness patterns. For both types of roughness patterns, expressions for steady film pressure, load carrying capacity, dynamic stiffness, and damping coefficients are obtained.Transverse roughness patterns provides enhanced load carrying capacity, dynamic stiffness, and damping coefficients over smooth surfaces, but longitudinal roughness patterns have adverse effects. In addition, compared to the nonmagnetic case (M0=0) and the Newtonian case (l*=0), the bearing performance improves by the couple stress and applied magnetic field.
