Abstract

Murraya koenigii is a versatile medicinal plant commonly used in traditional practices like Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani. Various parts of the plant, including leaves, bark, roots, and seeds, have shown therapeutic benefits backed by preclinical and clinical research. The plant has significant pharmacological activities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antidiabetic, anticancer, immunomodulatory, hepatoprotective, neuroprotective, antimicrobial, antiulcer, and wound-healing effects. In terms of phytochemistry, Murraya koenigii is rich in alkaloids (like mahanimbine and koenimbine), flavonoids, phenolics, tannins, terpenoids, and carbazoles, all of which improve its medicinal properties. Common uses include treating diabetes, dysentery, nausea, hemorrhoids, digestive issues, fever, memory enhancement, skin irritations, and promoting hair growth. Current research supports its role as a chemoprotective agent, antipyretic, wound healer, and stimulant for the central nervous system. Ongoing investigations focus on its potential for disease prevention, therapy, and alternatives or additions to synthetic drugs.
