Leveraging AI and Satellite Monitoring for Methane Mitigation
Abstract
Methane emissions inexorably circumvent systematic detection, resulting in substantial underreporting, as they escape from valves and wellheads dispersed across remote fields. Although often intermittent, these emissions accumulate over time and contribute significantly to changes in atmospheric composition. Existing monitoring methods struggle to capture the spatially distributed and episodic nature of methane leaks. This study introduces a novel system that combines satellite sensing, machine-learning inference, and autonomous robotics into a single detection framework. By linking orbital detection with rapid data analysis and targeted ground-level inspection, the system shifts methane management from reactive remediation to a proactive, adaptive process. The result is a scalable approach capable of enabling swift intervention.
