Abstract

The objective was to provide a comprehensive review of the evidence on uterine suction tamponade (UST) devices and techniques for the management of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH). A narrative literature review was conducted to identify published studies, case reports, describing UST techniques, including the JADA system, modified Bakri balloon, suction hemostatic cannula, Foley catheter uterine suction (FOCUS), and suction tube uterine tamponade (STUT). Evidence demonstrates high rates of hemorrhage control with suction-based tamponade, often achieving hemostasis within minutes of application. Certain innovations provide low-cost, readily available options suitable for low-resource environments. Across all devices, adverse events were rare and typically minor. Uterine suction tamponade offers a physiologic and effective approach for the rapid control of postpartum hemorrhage. While the JADA system has expanded clinical use, several low-cost alternatives allow for global adoption of UST.
