Principle-Based Marketing: A Conceptual Model
Abstract
Organisations increasingly embed socially responsible practices into marketing strategies amid rising ESG imperatives and consumer demands, yet empirical inconsistencies persist due to scepticism, perceived hypocrisy, and backlash in polarised markets. While prior frameworks and reviews map CSR/CRM fundamentals they offer limited tactical guidance for conceptualising and delivering initiatives that balance moral legitimacy with ethical expectations. In response, this paper introduces Principle-Based Marketing (PBM) as a novel integrative framework and process model that uniquely positions enduring organisational principles as a consumer-centric fulcrum for aligning social values with marketing strategy. Synthesising disparate marketing schools of thought (exchange, macromarketing, consumer behaviour, management, service-dominant logic), corporate conduct theories, and marketplace dynamics, PBM proposes five interrelated constructs (objective commitment, cognisance, communication, internal congruence, and external congruence) that subsume granular variables to resolve empirical inconsistencies. Hypotheses delineate pathways from organisational actions to consumer perceptions, attitudes, and behaviours, yielding a managerial typology for risk assessment, brand differentiation, and portfolio audits. PBM advances current literature by providing theoretical parsimony and practical tools absent in existing syntheses, while addressing calls for holistic, actionable models in socially driven markets.
