Hybrid Go-Based Routing Framework Enhancing RPL for Constrained IIoT Networks
Abstract
Low-power and lossy networks are widely used in industrial IoT systems, but standard RPL often reacts slowly when links change. This study reports a Go-based routing design that runs routing control in parallel and adds small rule modules without updating end-device firmware. Tests on a 300-node setup showed that routing convergence time became shorter (−23.8%), packet loss dropped from 7.1% to 3.9%, and energy use improved by 12.4% compared with standard RPL. These benefits were most clear during short heavy-traffic periods, when faster link repair helped keep data delivery steady. The design also allowed on-site rule switching and rollback, which is helpful in factories where firmware updates are limited. The results show that user-space routing control can improve performance while staying compatible with current network stacks. This work offers a practical way to upgrade mixed industrial networks step by step. Future work will study mobile nodes, added security checks, and coordination with channel scheduling.
