Abstract

By exploring our experiences creating a poetry play based on the poems of Cheongma Yu Chi-hwan and participating in a competition, we aim to present the value of artistic creation from the perspectives of artists, researchers, and educators. We participated in poetry performance contests hosted by the Cheongma Literature Museum in 2023 and 2024. Combining poetry recitation and performance, we explored how the “True Poetry” expanded the performativity of poetry recitation by expressing the poet’s emotions through the body, breath, and acting of the reciter. As part of arts-based research, we come up with the following aspects from our experiences followed by the educational implications at the end. “True Poetry” explores the purity of unrequited love and the essence of poetry through a one-man play, centering on the literary exchange and poignant emotions between Yoo Chihwan and sijo poet Lee Yeong-do. The piece unfolds around the recitation of a line from the poem : “It is happier to love than to be loved.” Beyond mere obsession, the piece embodies poetic love on stage with transcendent devotion. Furthermore, the love story between the two poets transcends physicality and becomes a literary partnership, offering the audience a profound experience of healing and emotional restoration. This artistic sublimation, demonstrated through a variety of performances, including dance and rap, as well as a recitation of poems like , and with high school students.
