Abstract

The synthesis of literature is a fundamental tool in the production and updating of scientific knowledge. Various methodological approaches are available to synthesize evidence, each with specific purposes, levels of rigor, and areas of application. This article describes and compares the main types of literature reviews: narrative reviews, systematic review, meta-analysis, scoping review, overview of reviews, and rapid review. For each of them, the purpose, methodological characteristics, development process, and criteria for use are illustrated.
