Medicina di laboratorio basata sulle evidenze: tra conoscenza dichiarata e competenza effettiva. Risultati di una indagine nazionale
Abstract
Evidence-based laboratory medicine (EBLM) is a key paradigm for improving test appropriateness and the clinical value of healthcare. However, its actual level of knowledge and implementation in routine practice remains unclear. A national survey was conducted among Italian Society of Clinical Biochemistry- Laboratory and Clinical Molecular Biology- Laboratory Medicine (SIBioC) members working in laboratory settings. The structured questionnaire (26 items) explored knowledge, competencies, training, and needs related to EBLM. Data were analyzed descriptively. A total of 331 professionals participated. Most respondents reported theoretical knowledge of EBM/EBLM, but only a minority declared consistent practical application. Significant gaps emerged in advanced methodological skills, critical appraisal, and structured use of evidence. Approximately 80% of participants had not received formal training in EBLM. Key barriers included lack of time, limited organizational support, and restricted access to information resources. Notably, 99% of respondents expressed a need for further training, particularly focused on practical competencies. Although EBLM is widely recognized as important, a substantial gap persists between theoretical knowledge and real-world application. An integrated approach combining structured education, organizational support, and practical tools is essential to promote effective implementation of EBLM in laboratory practice.
