Evaluation of antioxidant activity, polyphenolic content, tannin, and flavonoids of Manilkara zapota fruit
Abstract
BACKGROUND: This study aims to evaluate the antioxidant activity, polyphenol, tannin, and flavonoid content of Manilkara zapota fruit, which is known to have high health potential due to its bioactive compound content. The background of this study is the importance of antioxidants in fighting free radicals that can cause various degenerative diseases, as well as the role of polyphenols, tannins, and flavonoids in providing antioxidant effects.METHODS: The research method includes the extraction of active compounds from Manilkara zapota fruit using ethyl acetate solvent, followed by testing antioxidant activity using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) method. The total content of polyphenols, tannins, and flavonoids was measured using the spectrophotometric method, with a standard curve for each class of compounds.RESULTS: The results showed that Manilkara zapota extract had significant antioxidant activity, with a fairly high content of polyphenols, tannins, and flavonoids. The DPPH test results showed that the extract was able to effectively neutralize free radicals, indicating great potential as a natural source of antioxidants.CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, Manilkara zapota fruit can be an important source of antioxidant compounds, especially from the polyphenol, tannin, and flavonoid groups, which can be beneficial for health. This study supports the use of Manilkara zapota fruit in health and nutrition applications as raw materials for natural antioxidant products.
