Idrottsgymnasier som talangutvecklingsmiljö – utmaningar och möjligheter
Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of Sweden’s upper secondary school sports programs (RIG and NIU), which aim to support talented youth in combining elite sports with academic education. It traces the historical development and policy background of these programs and highlights key challenges such as early specialization, socio-economic bias, relative age effects, and the complexity of talent identification. Although designed to foster dual careers, the programs often struggle to balance athletic and academic demands, potentially leading to stress, injury, burnout, and dropout—especially among female athletes and those lacking support structures. Research indicates that while many top-level athletes have attended these programs, a significant number have not, raising questions about the effectiveness and inclusivity of current selection processes. The chapter also addresses the evolving role of special sports teachers, who face complex responsibilities involving pedagogy, performance development, and admission decisions. New educational reforms emphasize the need for students to gain knowledge about elite sports career pathways, highlighting the importance of career education alongside sport-specific training. In conclusion, the chapter calls for a more flexible and evidence-informed approach to talent development, one that considers long-term athlete well-being and broader access to support systems. It recommends targeted mental health initiatives, injury prevention strategies, and greater attention to transitions within and beyond sport. Finally, it stresses the need for future research into learning processes and the key role of educators in dual career environments.
